How to pitch a film to a producer in India

A producer in Hyderabad or Mumbai reads dozens of pitches a week. Most of them are decided in the first page. This is what the good ones have in common.

Lead with the logline

One or two sentences. Who the protagonist is, what they want, what stands in the way, what is at stake. A logline is not a theme ("a film about love across religion"); it is a story engine ("a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl fall in love across a painted line, and the man who kept them apart buries them in the same grave").

Give them the ending

Producers do not want to be surprised; they want to know the film works. Include the ending in the synopsis. Keep it to one page, in present tense, in the order the audience will see it.

Say who it is for, honestly

"Everyone" is not an audience. Name the language, the region, the age band and the reference films that audience showed up for. A Telugu family drama that wants the Sita Ramam audience is a clearer proposition than a "pan-Indian emotional film".

Show the stage and the ask

Is the screenplay locked? Is a director attached? Is there a budget range? What do you need next: a co-producer, a lead, funding? A producer wants to know where they would enter.

Make it easy to follow up
